Watershed ponds are filled and maintained primarily from watershed runoff. Some ponds may have supplemental water sources such as ground water pumped from wells. Surface water may be pumped or diverted from rivers and streams. Many Kentucky ponds are fed by underground springs. Kentucky receives an average annual rainfall of inches.       River Garden Farms of Knights Landing, California launched an unprecedented project in May of by deploying rearing habitat structures for juvenile salmon in . The hatchery rears three year-classes of captive brood-stock. Brood-fish are selected for captive rearing on the basis of genetic diversity. The intention is to maximize the genetic diversity of the coho produced. The captive coho are reared on a diet of fresh-frozen krill and exercised by water currents generated in the rearing pools.

Captive rearing is a short-term approach to species preservation. The main goal of the captive rearing approach is to avoid demographic and environmental risks of cohort extinction; maintaining the genetic identity of the breeding unit is an important but secondary File Size: KB. husbandry & hand rearing Our many years in farming has given us the opportunity to select the best techniques to produce a premium product which we are proud to deliver. Steelhead at that time averaged 92 fish per pound (fpp). Five study ponds were set up to evaluate the growth potential of smaller sized steelhead; two ponds were designated as ‘large’ fish ponds (BP58 and BP60), one pond was designated as a ‘small’ fish pond (BP62), and two ponds were set up as controls (BP54 and BP56).

Pond 2 is the largest pond and has historically been used to raise yearling summer steelhead. Ponds 3 and 4 are used each year for the rearing of yearling summer steelhead. All of the earthen steelhead rearing ponds have volitional collection and transportation facilities located downstream of.

Pen Rearing Information Pen rearing projects around the lake aid in the stocking efforts of both Steelhead and Chinook Salmon. Pen rearing allows these fish to smolt and to grow to larger sizes before their release date.

Historically, this dynamic stretch of river has been integral for salmonid migration, but in recent years it was blocked off from the river to house a hatchery. Fish farming or pisciculture involves raising fish commercially in tanks or enclosures such as fish ponds, usually for is the principal form of aquaculture, while other methods may fall under mariculture.A facility that releases juvenile fish into the wild for recreational fishing or to supplement a species' natural numbers is generally referred to as a fish hatchery.
